What is Ripple?

Ripple Network is a blockchain-based platform offering various services for financial institutions looking to make cross-border transactions more cost and time effective. Their technology eliminates currency conversion fees while directly transferring funds.

RippleNet works by issuing digital tokens known as IOUs which represent debt obligations between users. Once transferred between accounts on the network, these IOUs represent value on its ledger – validated using a consensus protocol with a quorum of validators to authenticate transactions on RippleNet ledger.

Ripple Labs hopes to connect all major banks globally onto its network and establish an efficient method for international money transfers. However, regulators such as the US Securities and Exchange Commission filed suit against Ripple Labs in December 2020 which has made investors wary about investing in Ripple’s cryptocurrency.

What is XRP?

Ripple uses the digital asset XRP as the backbone for their payment network, with liquidity products using this digital currency as its bridge currency allowing financial institutions to make low-cost, fast cross-border payments that reduce both costs and delivery times for funds to reach their destination.

Ripple differs from other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin in that its technology is centralized rather than decentralized, meaning the company that developed Ripple (Ripple Labs) owns a significant percentage of total supply of XRP. Furthermore, its transaction mechanism requires burning small amounts of XRP with each transaction for deflationary effect – further distinguishing it as a deflationary asset.

Ripple has managed to overcome these risks and prove the value of its platform. Cuallix, a Mexican credit payment and lending company, recently used Ripple’s xRapid product to send money between Mexico and the US without needing pre-funded nostro accounts, significantly decreasing costs and time of transfer.

Ripple Ledger (XRP) is the blockchain platform developed by fintech firm Ripple that facilitates cross-border payments, while its token can be used for microtransactions and remittances.

On Thursday, the price of Ripple XRP spiked on news that a judge partially sided with them in their lawsuit against the SEC. According to this ruling, it stated that Ripple does not qualify as a security, though other claims from Ripple Labs’ 2020 civil suit will proceed towards trial – many in the crypto industry hope this ruling will provide greater regulatory clarity regarding digital assets.
